CHALLENGE YOURSELF (4)
16 12 2008From then on, my schoolwork improved. I learned to focus on hard words and my spelling got better. I think this shows that you can chieve almost anything – but you have to make the effort. I didn’t top challenging myself. I went on from winning that essay prize to taring student magazine. I think I wanted to prove that the boy who as caned for not being able to read or write very well could do t – and I did.
As I grew older, I faced bigger challenges. I seemed to un on high energy. I wanted adventure. Danger tempted me. I ad already set a record for being the first to cross the Atlantic in a alloon with Per. Next we decided to cross the Pacific Ocean, from apan to the USA. It was a far more dangerous venture, across 8,000 iles of open sea. No one had ever done it before. I knew how isky it was because our rival had just died in an attempt. His balloon ad torn and he landed in the freezing sea. It was so stormy, he couldn’t be rescued in time, and he died from cold.
Joan didn’t want e to go on this trip, and I must admit I was nervous. But I had romised to go and we were ready for the attempt. I couldn’t ithdraw, so I resigned myself to fate. My head said stop, but my heart said go. Whatever the danger, I wouldn’t give in and I think Joan understood.
I knew it would be a strange trip. I was a team layer, who always looked for the best in the people. Per was a quiet oner, who always looked for the worst. I hoped we would balance ach other out.
